Monitoring the health of your pet is crucial, as they may not exhibit visible signs of illness.
We have a full in-house laboratory to provide quick analysis of blood samples on site. The main categories of blood testing include a complete blood count, a biochemistry profile and thyroid hormone blood testing. Blood testing is recommended for emergencies or for patients who are sick. It is also recommended for pre-anesthetic testing, preventative care screening and to monitor the patient while they are taking specific medications to ensure your cat’s safety.
Blood testing is a valuable tool to use when figuring out if your cat has any illnesses. It is not always easy to tell if your cat is sick because of their tendency to hide symptoms. Because of this, we usually have to wait and watch for any changes in behaviour or for the cat to start to show signs of illness. Blood testing plays a vital role in telling us what may be going on with your cat. Having wellness and preventative blood tests done regularly can keep them as healthy as possible before they become sick.
We have a full in-house laboratory to provide a quick analysis of your cat’s blood sample on site. Once results are available, your veterinarian will review all findings with you and explain in detail any underlying issue, usually while you are still at the clinic. If for some reason the blood testing takes longer than the appointment scheduled, your vet will call you and go over everything with you over the phone.
Preparations for blood testing varies depending on what the cat is being tested for. Some blood samples may require fasting to be done beforehand. In these cases, it is asked that no breakfast be given the morning of the blood test. If there are any special instructions needed, the doctor will make the necessary recommendations.
Blood testing is usually recommended when the cat is sick or if there is an emergency. For surgeries, it is recommended to be done before going under anesthesia to check the function of the internal organs. Blood tests can also be a part of your cat’s annual exam or are periodically necessary if your cat is on medications that need to be closely monitored.
In conjunction with a blood test, a urinalysis provides information on the kidney function, possible bladder infections, concerns with the urinary system. It can also help detect diabetes. Doctors prefer to collect urine samples from cats by cystocentesis, which uses a needle and syringe to extract urine directly from the bladder. This way we have a sterile and fresh sample to test.
